The Conquest: What is The Ride to Conquer Cancer ?

The Ride to Conquer Cancer is a unique, two-day cycling event to take place on June 20-21, 2009. During this bold cycling journey, you will ride from Vancouver to Seattle. The Ride to Conquer Cancer is a new endeavour to do just that - conquer cancer. The funds you raise through The Ride to Conquer Cancer will deliver breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care atwebimage_backwheel_blk BC Cancer Foundation.

Will I be able to ride that far?

Definitely! The Ride is for everyone from the average weekend warrior to accomplished cyclists. This event is for all kinds of people: mothers, fathers, grandparents, friends, and cancer survivors. It will be a challenge, but that’s exactly what makes it so meaningful. Our team of Ride Guides is available to help develop a training plan that fits in with your life and will get you in shape for The Ride. We know that you can do it. Just think of yourself on a mission to bring the latest cancer research and care to those who need it most. While on the route, you can go at a fast or moderate pace, whatever suits your endurance level. If for any reason you can’t continue, there will be sweep vehicles along the route to take you to Camp.

Worried about the length of the Ride to Conquer Cancer?  Don’t be.  Your ride is meant to be a challenge, but not an extreme challenge.  In other words, the length and topography of the route are designed to feel like a significant accomplishment— a doable one.  In fact, everyone who has trained, and we mean everyone will be able to finish each day (and still have enough energy for partying at Camp and the finish line).  But rest assured, you’ll also be fully supported along the entire route with sweep vehicles that will pick you up if you have bike problems, an injury, or are just plain tired.  And if you’re ready to end each day just after the 100K mark, you’ll be able to do so at the Celebration Station.  There, you’ll receive a hero’s welcome and be provided transportation to Camp or the finish line.

Remember we’re out to conquer cancer, not each other.  Take your time while on the route and at the pit stops.  This event is a ride, not a race so don’t feel pressured to overexert yourself.  Go at your own comfortable pace and you’ll be amazed by how far you really can go!

How do I Train?

Most likely you’re not used to riding all day, then waking up the next morning and doing it again. So we’ll help you get ready to do just that! We’ll organize Training Rides in different areas and terrains which vary in difficulty from beginner to experienced Rider. We’ll also have Orientation sessions where you’ll learn more about bike basics in case you’ve never changed a bike tire or want to know the difference between a road, recumbent, hybrid, and mountain bike. Another important aspect of training for The Ride is learning how to fuel your body through proper nutrition and hydration. So once you sign up for The Ride, you’ll receive a Ride Manual to learn about eating and drinking right, help track your training progress, and learn important stretches to keep your body limber. And last but not least, you can always call your Ride Guides at [888] 771-BIKE [2453] when you have questions about how to physically prepare for The Ride. They’ll be able to provide you with one-on-one advice and guidance to ensure achievement of your goals.

How do I raise money?

The need for new cancer treatments and prevention methods is great. That’s why each participant must raise at least $2,500 in order to ride. You may have never raised that much money before, but don’t worry. We’ve helped thousands of people raise more than $100 million for cancer causes, and we’ll be here to help you every step of the way. Of course you can call our expert Ride Guides at any time with questions at [888] 771-BIKE [2453].

Once you sign up for The Ride, you’ll receive a Ride Manual that will teach you how to ask for donations and keep track of your fundraising progress. You’ll also have your own webpage on http://www.conquercancer.ca/ where you can post your photo, tell your story, and then email the link of your page to your donors so they can donate straight to you online! Once you are a Rider, we’ll give you all the tools you need and we’ll be there for you the whole way. That’s our promise.

Whether this is your first time fundraising, or you’re an old pro, we’ll help you reach and exceed your goals because we’re out to beat cancer together.

webimage_handlebars3_blkAm I on my own when I'm on the road?

Not at all! We’re with you throughout your journey. It begins on  when you’ll check-in, meet your fellow participants, and kick off the event with a smile. Along the route, Pit Stops will provide you with water, sports drinks, snacks, plenty of portable toilets, and lunch. At Camp on Saturday night, you’ll have hot meals and hot showers, and you'll spend the night in a cozy tent. You can eat a hot, nutritious dinner and then enjoy the evening's entertainment or spend some time getting to know other Riders. We also transport your gear for you when you’re out riding, so you don’t have to worry about carrying a backpack while you ride. The journey ends on June 21, 2009, when you’ll be greeted and congratulated by your family and friends.
