AN EPIC RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER
On the weekend of June 15th, I'll be participating in the two-day cycling event called The Ride to Conquer Cancer – a 240km bike ride from Vancouver to Seattle --benefiting the efforts of the BC Cancer Foundation.
All of the proceeds of this outstanding event will go directly to the BC Cancer Foundation. The BC Cancer Foundation the fundraising partner of the BC Cancer Agency, a global leader in the area of cancer research and care.
Last year’s Ride raised over $11 million in the fight against cancer. I am very proud to be a part of this worthy cause, although certain parts of my body will not forgive me for some time!
This year, I will match every donation equally up to $5,000 so that your donation will go twice as far to eliminating the scourge of cancer, a disease that will develop in 2 of 5 people in their lifetimes and kill one in four Canadians.
To give you some sense of the leading research (in addition to ongoing care) of the BC Cancer Agency, in April of this year scientists funded by the agency recently concluded a landmark study that re-writes the rulebook on breast cancer and will form the basis of next-generation treatments that are tailored to the individual patient.
Researchers reclassified the disease into 10 completely new categories based on the genetic fingerprint of a tumour as well as discovering several completely new genes that had never before been linked to breast cancer. The study will allow doctors to predict whether a tumour will respond to a particular treatment, whether the tumour is likely to spread to other parts of the body or if it is likely to return.
On behalf of the BC Cancer Foundation and the many cancer patients who have benefitted, thank you very much for your donation - one that I look forward to supporting through my matching donation.
