Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer

When my friend Ed, who lost his father to cancer, approached me to do the Ride to Conquer Cancer, I was extremely hesitant. I was full of excuses. 200km is a long way to ride. I don't really have a good bike or the right equipment. I have a very busy life and I'm already in the midst of training for a full marathon in May. I'm uncomfortable asking people for money. And then I heard him say, "I can guarantee that doing this ride will never be as hard as fighting cancer yourself or losing someone you love to cancer".

How true.

Nine years ago, my father-in-law also lost his life to cancer. We were all left feeling helpless while that cruel disease quickly took over his body. The memory of what he went through and the wish that no one else would have to go through that, is why I am riding and why I am proud to ask for your support.

The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation is a cycling journey along the majestic Canadian Rockies, which I'm embarking on to fight cancer. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!

Contribute to this history-making event with a donation.EVERY DOLLAR HELPS!Funds raised in The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care at the Alberta Cancer Foundation, a leader in cancer research and treatment.

With my sincere thanks and gratitude,

Thank you in advance for your help!

I'm riding for LUNG CANCER!
All the funds I raise through your generous support, will directly benefit the Lung Cancer Translational Research Initiative at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. I have focused my passion and efforts to raise the profile and resources for lung cancer research after reading the following...
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death due to cancer in Canada. It causes approximately 29% of cancer deaths among men and 22% among women.
On average, 394 Canadians die of lung cancer every week.
One in 11 men is expected to develop lung cancer during his lifetime, and one in 13 men will die of it.
One in 16 women is expected to develop lung cancer during her lifetime, and one in 18 women will die of it.
I was surprised to also find out how grossly underfunded lung cancer research is across the spectrum of cancers. The public isn't aware that lung cancer receives barely 1% of all research dollars and even less from all charitable donations for cancer research. There are few advocates and little interest in lung cancer. A sad but true fact!

The stark reality is the lack of funding for lung cancer research has dramatically impeded the timely advancement of treatment options and outcomes for lung cancer patients.....I call it the Rodney Dangerfields of cancers. Join me to change this reality....help me raise the bar of lung cancer advocacy....and dare to dream about finding a cure for lung cancer right here at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

Every dollar raised will make a big difference - quite simply put: more funding support = more research = new hope for earlier detection tests, better treatment options and increased survivor rates. Your ride donations will help to advance this important initiative.
Thank you for your support and belief that we can change the face of lung cancer outcomes. Together we can offer a promise and commitment for real hope!

Warm regards,

Only 96 more days to go!
Well lately I've been doing a lot of running and some biking. Once the weather warms up I will be doing a lot more biking, especially longer rides. Now I need to step up my fundraising efforts. Since my initial contributions, donations are now coming in at a snails pace.
I know that it is hard to give up your hard earned money to yet another cause. There are so many things to spend money on these days. But would it be so bad to give up that coffee and treat once or twice and give that money to a very needy organization instead? Just think how good you will feel knowing that you helped make a difference.
The Alberta Cancer Foundation prides itself on ensuring donor dollars are leveraged through strategic partnership. And our track record is a good one. Overall, every research dollar invested by the Alberta Cancer Foundation is leveraged to attract an additional two dollars in funding from other sources.
Participation in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer helped launch more than 50 new cancer research projects.
Here is an example of a new project made possible with the dollars raised in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.
Dr. Roy Golsteyn at the University of Lethbridge studies cancer cell division. He treats cells with drugs or irradiation under conditions that are similar to those used in cancer clinics. Dr. Golsteyn then uses microscopy to examine how cancer cells sometimes survive treatments. With a grant made possible by the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, Dr. Golsteyn is able to purchase an inverted light microscope to better observe human cancer cells.
I hope you will make a donation today. ANY AMOUNT is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!
