Matty and I, ready to Conquer Cancer

Welcome to Bob's Ride to Conquer Cancer™

The RCC is a 200 km, 3000 person cycling fundraiser from Toronto to Niagara Falls. Funds raised support ground-breaking research at the Princess Margaret Hospital. Without a doubt, I am alive today because of research like this.

In April 2007, I found a lump above my right collarbone. That summer, I went through a number of tests. In October I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system. Anna and I were dumbfounded, but determined to prevail. Last winter I went through six months of chemotherapy, naturopathy and energy healing. I stayed active throughout, exercising and eating well.

Anna has been with me every step of the way. Sometimes I think that she had cancer worse than me.

Cancer can be a blessing. In our case, the blessing came in the form of a baby boy. Matthew was born Nov. 10, using sperm I banked before chemotherapy. Our own silver lining!

My sister Lisa and friend Jodie rode in the inaugural 2008 Ride to Conquer Cancer, raising over $6000.

Throughout, I have kept working at the North Bay Fire Department. My brothers there have been a tremendous support. I didn’t have much accumulated sick time, so they covered my shifts when I was too sick to work.

So please, contribute to my Ride to Conquer Cancer. I’ve set my goal high - $7500 - because I don’t want to reach my goal then give up. I want to keep pushing. Funds raised will support breakthrough research, teaching, and care at Princess Margaret, one of the top 5 cancer research hospitals in the world.

Thank you!

7 Days To Go!
Fundraising has been fantastic in the last few days, with over $1000 coming in! I still have over $1600 to go to reach my goal of $7500. Honestly, a few months back I didn't think I would reach that goal. Now, with your help, I know we'll pass it!
I'll be training hard this weekend, with back-to-back long rides (including one day of about 150 km). Next week I'll be taking it easy, with just a few short rides to stay in the game.
Some friends have asked for a "vegan" fundraising option. This is because money donated for research purposes may incorporate animal trials. I absolutely respect this. Anyone interested, please email me.
I'll also be writing names on my hand in honour of those fighting cancer and in memory of those who lost the battle. If you would like me to write someone's name on my hand, please let me know. I already have 27 names.
If anyone will be in the area next weekend, I'd love to see you at a cheering station or the finish line. Contact me for more info!
Ride on!

Ten days to go!
Just ten days until the Ride to Conquer Cancer, supporting cancer research at the Princess Margaret Hospital. I can hardly wait! Three thousand cyclists and over two hundred kilometres from Toronto to Niagara Falls, here we come! Anna and Matty, my Mom and sister, Jodie, and thousands more will be cheering from the sidelines. When all is said and done, we should have raised over $15 million dollars for one of the top five cancer research hospitals in the world.
There are three other North Bay cyclists participating in the Ride, and we have been training together. Also, I bought a new bike, which is a good 5 lbs. lighter than the old one. In the last four days I've been on three rides totaling 190 km. The more saddle-time I get in, the better, because I have also registered for Saturday's "Afternoon Afterburn," an extra 50 km ride hosted by Tour de France stage winner and Olympic silver medalist Steve Bauer. He'll leave me in the dust!
Fundraising also goes well. Thanks to all who have donated so far! I've just passed the $5000 mark, with $2500 to go to reach my goal. That's twenty-five $100 donations or 125 $20 donations. It's not too late! Click above to make a secure online donation!
Thanks for all the support and well-wishes! I'll send you another update during the Ride and/or immediately after!

A Brand New Day
Don Wright of A Brand New Day blogged a little about me and the Ride. You should check it out. Don blogs mostly on Christian and Anishnaabe spirituality, old growth forests, and ATVing. Quite a mixture.

New bike!
Picked up my new Kona Zing from Cycle Works last week. I had to ask Kevin a few times to make sure he knew what he was doing by giving me such a good deal. The bike is much lighter than the 20-year old Victory Tri-A. I'll keep the old bike as a spare trainer or commuter bike, and use the Zing for the fun stuff. Speaking of that, I broke her in with a 40 km ride to Callander and Corbeil last Thursday. My butt was super sore, so I guess I need to put in more saddle time in the next month!
Fundraising goes great. Up to $4500 total including some donations which are not yet reflected on the thermometer graph above.

Thanks to Kevin @ Cycle Works
Want to give a shout out to Kevin at Cycle Works in North Bay. Kevin's runs a great bike shop, and since becoming aware of the Ride to Conquer Cancer, he's been very helpful. So thanks Kevin!

Cancer research saved my life
I'm so happy you've taken the time to visit my fundraising page. Now that you're here, why not make a donation? Like they say, every little bit counts. If it wasn't for cancer research, like the kind done at the Princess Margaret, I wouldn't be here right now. Well, I probably would be, but not for much longer. Because of fundraising like this, Matty has a daddy today, and hopefully for a long time to come.
Say a prayer, dance a jig, or send some metta our way tomorrow. After you make your donation, click below to find out why:

Time to get a move on!
February is here, which means it's time for me to get serious about fundraising for the Ride to Conquer Cancer.
I've got some great ideas, which mostly involve networking at the Fire Department, on Facebook, and in my email address folder. If you've got an idea, drop me a line or leave a comment here.
Health wise, I'd rate me at 8/10. My level of fatigue has crept higher, but thankfully I've been able to match that with a good 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night. My immune system still isn't up to snuff, so I have to make sure I wash my hands a lot. I'm still getting over a cold I caught two weeks ago. Hopefully I'll get back in the gym tomorrow with a short workout, something to get the blood flowing and pump out the toxins.
Thanks for checking in!

Ready for training!
My old Norco Victory Tri-A road bike is out of storage and back on the road after a tuneup from Cycle Works in North Bay. I bought some cycling shoes and pedal clips to go with it. Now I'm a mean, cancer-fighting, cycling machine.
I've done a few training rides. Temagami's not the best town for road biking, but if I ride out to the end of Fox Run and back, it's about 10 km. I avoid the highway, too many trucks, not enough shoulder.
Anna and I are moving to North Bay in October, so I expect to be doing a lot more riding there, as well as commuting to work with my mountain bike, right through the winter!
