Two Scarborough men will be riding to conquer cancer on June 9 and 10 .
Raul Pavon, a computer technician, and Jason Ettorre, a teacher at Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute, are part of "Steve's Cycle Paths" team and will be cycling 200 kilometres from Toronto to Niagara Falls over two days in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.
Pavon is riding the long journey with his family in mind. His mother beat breast cancer three times. His wife has family members who have beaten cancer, and others who have lost their lives to the disease.
Pavon remains optimistic that a cure will be found. "Participating on this ride and riding alongside (other) cancer survivors is sort of a blessing because I know somewhere down the line, we are going to find a cure," he said.
"I know there are other diseases out there, but right now cancer is the number one that hits just about home to everybody."
Pavon says he has been working out at the gym almost daily riding on the stationary bike as part of his training for the ride.
Pavon met Ettorre, another first-time participant, at the Conquer Cancer orientation recently and they've kept in touch.
Ettorre has witnessed the disease affecting his friends and family and will "ride with them in mind," he said.
"I didn't want to let this go by without thinking of them and doing something."
Pavon and Ettorre have set up personal pages on the Conquer Cancer website that feature blogs describing their reasons for participating in the charity bike ride and their fundraising goals; there is also a green button on their pages where people can donate online.
The money raised for the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer will benefit the Campbell Family Institute at Princess Margaret Hospital.

To A Lost Loved One....
I can let your body go,
but not the part of you
that lives in my heart.
My warm memories of you
will be with me
all the days of my life,
and I will cherish
every one of them.
They will give me
strength when I'm weak
and happiness
when I'm down.
I'll only have to
remember your smile,
and my hope will be renewed.
I'll only have to
think about the way your eyes
touched something deep
inside of me,
and I'll remember
that love bonds
one soul to another eternally.
I can let your body go,
but never the love for you
I carry in my heart
