Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®

Welcome to my Personal Page! The Ride to Conquer Cancer is a two-day cycling journey to benefit cancer research, from Vancouver to Seattle, about 160 miles. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, not least the fact that I've hardly ridden a bike since I was 15!

Contribute to this history-making event with a donation. Since I'm a US rider, your sponsorship of me will go toward The Canary Foundation's support of research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, focusing on the early detection of cancer. I believe strongly in this approach -- in fact, I'm a small part of it, myself, in my Canary-supported work at Fred Hutchinson.

You can find out more about Canary on their website:
http://www.canaryfoundation.org/

or in this excellent Wired article:
http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/magazine/17-01/ff_cancer
(warning: for some reason Wired used some vaguely risque pictures in this article)

Don't worry about the suggested amounts on the donation page -- any amount you can contribute would be much appreciated!

I reached my goal!
Thanks to all of you who have helped me raise over $3,000 for cancer research! I hope to keep driving up my total right up until the ride!

Around the Lake
My teammate Paul and I rode around Lake Washington yesterday -- clockwise. It was my longest ride yet, at 60 miles. I'm starting to get into the general vicinity of the length of the days of the Ride (80 miles and 80-90 miles, respectively). Feeling good!

City ride
Last night after work, my teammate Paul and I biked up to the Park&Ride in Roosevelt and rode around the city with 8 other bikers, in a Cascade Bike Club ride.
We racked up about 40 miles! Lots of hills, too. It was really good for me to get more comfortable riding in a group and in traffic. Nice to knock out a ride on a weeknight, too!

Glamor shots
Today a photographer from the Center News at FHCRC took pictures of Paul and me for an article about our ride. Just the two of us riding from the Hutch!
We held our bikes over our heads with one arm, in the pic. Extra difficulty: Paul's bike is carbon, mine's metal.

52 miles
Yesterday I rode with my teammate, Paul, and a coworker. We went up around Lake Washington to Redhook Brewery. Jason went on from there, because he's a bike racer and already in great shape, but Paul and I headed back and made it a 52-miler, with a nice steep hill up from Golden Gardens at the end.
I'm on a hybrid bike, vs. a more long-ride-appropriate road bike, and I'm feeling the limitations a bit, but all in all training is going great!

35 miles
I rode 35 miles on Saturday, and another 20 on Sunday. Beautiful weather, and some great views.
Saturday's ride was up the Interurban trail to Everett. I fell in with another cyclist going about the same pace; he turned out to be a lot faster than me, so I really had to push myself to keep up. I was pretty woozy for a couple hours after that -- next time I'm bringing something to keep my blood sugar up!

Beautiful Wekeend for Riding
I did two rides this weekend, one down to the Sculpture Park downtown with a few extra twists, and the other out to West Seattle. Both were over 25 miles, the longest I've ridden yet!
The weather was beautiful, and it was fun to explore some trails I hadn't ridden yet.

Stress fracture?
Bah. I've been having trouble with my left foot at taekwondo for the last couple months, and I finally saw the doctor about it. He thinks it's a stress fracture, and I'll get a bone scan soon.
Happily, cycling doesn't seem to irritate my foot, so I should be able to keep up my training, and I'm absolutely still going to do the Ride. The Ride is actually really good timing, to give me something athletic to do while I'm taking some time out of TKD.

Bike commute to work
I tried out my bike commute to work for real for the first time today, with a stop at UW for my statistics class. It was all smooth except for a closed bike lane on the bridge between UW and work. No biggie.
It was a lot of fun biking in. The stretch between UW and work only took me 15 minutes on a bike, which is about the same as by shuttle, and now I'm not tied down to the shuttle's schedule.

Burke-Gilman to Magnuson
Today was a glorious day in Seattle, so I took the Burke-Gilman trail from Ballard to Magnuson and back, about 20 miles roundtrip and my longest ride so far. It's a beautiful trail, so close to several different neighborhoods but set just slightly apart, its own little world. At one point on the way back all I could see was the trail, trees on either side, and the Space Needle directly ahead.
I took a spill over the handlebars on the way back, hitting some train tracks at too low an angle. I got lucky -- I wasn't going fast, no one was behind me, and I was able to go right into a roll and get right back on my feet, with just some scuffed knuckles. Thank you, martial arts training!

Checking out the commute route
One of the ways I'll be getting myself ready for this event is by bike commuting to school (I have a class at UW) and to work. I tried out that route, today, from home to UW to FHCRC and back, and it went great! This week I'll start doing it in rush hour!

Taking the plunge
I just decided to do this thing. I bought my bike last Saturday, a hybrid; first bike I've owned in 10 years, and I barely rode the last one!
I've got a long way to go to get ready for this thing. But I'm excited, both for the event and to be raising money for early detection of cancer!
