$12.50 per kilometer ridden

That is how much money we need to contribute to the BC Cancer Foundation to affect change in the lives of BC children today. The ride is 200km over 2 days from Vancouver, BC to Seattle, WA.

BC has some of the country's highest cancer survival rates, and we can help make them better.

Our contributions will be used for breakthrough research, and compassionate care for children who need our help right here in BC.

Please donate through my page today, then check back and follow my progress through training, the donation-a-meter, and the ride itself.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.

The end of the blog
Almost...
The last reading on my tripometer was 255km I believe; The bike is currently in the shop for a tune up and the weekend we have all been thinking about is upon us.
I'll probably do one more entry after the ride just so that people who do check the site get to know the ending, even if I don't speak to them on a regular basis.
I would never have the opportunity to do this ride if it weren't for a great many people. I will list them in order of importance at my last blog post.

CAW membership has its privledges
This morning I added a few kilometers onto my usual bike commute.
I stopped by the CAW Union hall on twelfth, and met with Bill Gaucher who is the treasurer/secretary and presented me with a cheque for $500 on behalf of the union.
I am still short of my fund raising goal by about $800-$900. But I am in the midst of writing a letter to my company TST Overland Express to see if they will match the union's contribution.

I'm just watching the wheels go 'round and 'round
Well, another week has passed, already!
The weather this week was great, got a good ride into UBC (university near us); then took a ride the next day though Coquitlam and Port Moody.
Sunday was my favorite ride though, after running a couple of errands (on my bike) I rode from New Westminster, to Commercial skytrain station, from there to 10th ave W at Alma (almost UBC), and then riding along the seashore to Hastings Racecourse (Playland and the PNE) at which point I stopped, watched a hockey game with my best friend Cole and took a ride home.

Eagle Eye Cherry
Wow, what a week. Changed up the training schedule to a two on, two off, one on, two off schedule.
This week I admired the cherry blossom canopy across 10th Ave (Vancouver), rode to white pine beach and back, saw community extremes along Kingsway in Burnaby at night, got caught in two thunderstorms... but the best ride of all was a fun ride with my wife, daughter and mum over 5 km though uptown New Westminster.

See you next week.

Whoomp! There it is!
In the past 2 weeks I covered about 130km. I did attempt to climb Mount Seymour after getting there from New West, but ran out of water, and time also I had headaches and dizziness so I made the choice to turn around without getting to the top. Gives me a reason to try again ;-)
I also spent 6 days in bed with a severe sinus congestion and headache ... I missed work and even after I went to work I wasn't riding for a couple of days.
So I am calling it 130km over the last 2 weeks. Hopefully I can start stretching those numbers a little longer soon.

Couple of weeks since my last post
In the first week I only covered 20km, as I was made aware of a problem with my drive train (worn chain and cassette). So I took the bike to the shop (Cap's Sapperton)and after a couple days they gave it back with the new parts installed and a tune up. So I got back on the bike on Monday ... got through the commute (used some cool tools to perform a good cleaning of the drive train now its all new) so that was 100km, plus a training ride on Sunday for 60km and another 10km home from Culver van drop....170km on the week, not bad, took me 8 1/2 hours so the average speed was 20km/hr.
Also I learned how to change a flat on the road (though I don't have all the required kit yet).

Island Ride
So since my last update, I have ridden 90km. I did one commute, in great sunshine weather and then Saturday March 6th will stay in my mind for a while.
Started the day at 6:45am, off to work, got a flat while working and changed the tire, raced home and had lunch with Ombretta and Maggie for 1/2 an hour, and packed my panniers. That was about quarter to 1pm. Jumped on the bike and rode over the Patullo bridge (I have now, ridden a motorcycle, driven a car and a semi, walked and ridden a bicycle over the Patullo) and rode the 35km to catch the 3pm ferry. I had a good pace, so I was there about 15minutes past 2. Took the ferry to Swartz Bay and arrived at about 5pm...back on the bike I went down the Lochside trail, past Dan "the brit" Martin's dad's (and lets not forget Margaret's) place though I was racing against the light and didn't stop. I continued along the trail for about 32km until I lost it at Quadra near Pat Bay Hwy ... but with the handy-dandy written instructions from my lovely trouble and strife I got there without a hiccup, what's more is I don't think I could have found a faster route if I had all the time in the world. So my average speed was 23km/hr (14.49 miles/hour) for 71.56km or 3 hours and 4 minutes (not including the ferry ride rest 1.5 hours).
Did I ever have a great night after the ride?!?!?! There was a wicked bluegrass jam / fund raiser (graciously hosted by Bonnie and Eric, Aimee's folks); met a bunch of cool people and I was sad the night had to end.
Weekly mileage: 90km

Been a while since my last update
So the bike spent a week in the shop, they gave it back saying that it's going to be $160 for a whole new drivetrain...the cheap component set, it gets more expensive from there. Ombretta and I decided to save money for a while then buy me a new bike altogether (probably convert this one to a fixie at a later time).
not quite 2 week mileage but here we go:
period of time mileage 135km
total mileage 641km
Since my last tune up (at Caps) it has been more than 800km (from the beginning of the year). Gotta hope that the bike holds together long enough for us to have the cash for a new bike. Thanks again to my donors... and soon to be donors.

Ouch, not the best picture
Saturdays ride distance 55km. Aimee and I got a police escort (one cop from New Brunswick and the other cop from Montreal) around the olympic village to science world. How cool is getting a police escort from 2 out of town cops in our own town...lol?
Covered quite a lot of action today, saw Queen Elizabeth park, rode through Pacific Spirit Park, sprinted through UBC, lazily drifted along the seaside at false creek north, animatedly covered 1/2 the stanley park seawall, and woefully wrapped it up at waterfront centre.
Ombretta found and purchased a bike she likes, we attached the child carrier and plan on taking our first family ride ever. Did that, grocery shop at Safeway last week.
Thursday update, set another record this week, 117km - so far.

ARGH, not enough miles...
Took a couple of days off this week. I probably shouldn't have, but there it is. We have been actively looking for a bike for Ombretta but haven't found the right one yet.

Total Mileage 369
Oh yeah, I passed 500km since the beginning of the year. Feels pretty good these days. And I wrote a haiku:

pedals in motion

60km in one day... way 2 go
Yeah, alright... we did it. A 60 km ride through the most beautiful parts of Pitt Meadows (the dykes and farms down by the Fraser river) and we came across some technical spots (whilst we were jumping fences through a construction zone) and finished the ride with an all out sprint to beat the bus we would have caught if we weren't up to the finishline...BUT WE WERE!!!
Weekly mileage 81
Total mileage 307
Other than the long ride I only got one commute in this week. I came down with a cold and a splitting headache, with sinus congestion at 6:30am in the 4C weather was enough to take a couple days off. Yeah, even superheroes need a day off now and then.
Thanks for reading.

First Long Ride ... Team 2gether
So this week I cleaned the chain in the living-room... thank you honey. The weather was great and on Thursday I rode home without a jacket, gloves or gaiters. That was sweet, its mid-January. So here are the mileage totals:
Weekly Miles 103
Total Miles 226
As I was saying, Team 2gether is going on its inaugural ride this Sunday (weather permitting). Its a 40+km ride to Maple Ridge and back from New Westminster. Praying for the weather.
Catch up with you soon.

Extreme Rainfall Warning
Was the weather report for three days of the week with a combined ~240mm of rain over 5 days.
The tights I bought are working like a charm to keep me warm and dry, although they may not be up to the task next week with snow expected at higher elevations.
Busy week on the personal side between work on Saturday and a desire to get the two bathrooms painted, as well as the master bedroom.
Weekly Mileage 82km.
Total Mileage 123km.
Thanks for reading...I'll get a new pic up in two weeks or so.

Men in tights
So, I am trying to update this weekly; I figured mileage numbers would be fun to look at...so
Weekly Mileage 41km
Total 41km
Also I got a chance to rock my cycling tights for the first time in the rain ... they work awesome. Speaking of rock, the ipod I got from Dan is great to listen to and keep me enthused as I am riding up those massive hills.
This is the weekend I am going to bulk mail people to come check out my page.
I am thinking of holding a comedy night for cancer ... keep your eyes open.

Resolutions, resolved...
Well, here we are at week one of 2010, and I have my mind set on achieving two goals...
1) raise the required funds for the ride to conquer cancer
2) ride, push, pull and drag my bike (and my bottom) the 200 km from Vancouver to Seattle
This will be a great experience for my contributors (you can help me get there) and myself, and it helps kids who need our compassion. Please donate today.
