Riding with Team Finn

Team Finn is about remembering a special gift of a boy; Finn Sullivan. Team Finn is about remembering Finn by celebrating life in a way he taught us to celebrate it. Team Finn is about Running, Jumping, Bouncing, Dancing, Singing, Loving, Smiling and Riding.

Team Finn is about Riding. Very much about Riding. A goal of 100 Riders and a quarter of a million dollars. Riding to end a Ride.

Team Finn is also about Jumping. Jumping into something and asking why later or maybe never at all. Team Finn is about the spirit of adventure and challenging yourself to take on things you did not think you were capable of. Raising a crazy sum of money. Riding a road bike for the first time. Going on a 130 km trip followed the next day by another 130 km trip. Team Finn is clearly about jumping.

It's pretty sad but everyone knows someone that has cancer or died of cancer.
In my case, my mom is a cancer survivor, a very close family friend is fighting cancer for a few years already and recently I heard one of my friends is diagnosed with lung cancer.

Based on current incidence rates, 40% of Canadian women and 45% of men will develop cancer during their lifetimes. Current mortality rates indicate that approximately 1 out of every 4 Canadians, will die from cancer.
We all want to stop this! We don't want to lose our family or friends to cancer.
I can’t find a cure on my own, but I can and will be participating in an event called The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting BC Cancer Foundation. Through this event, I can help prevent other families from having to struggle with this disease.

As a participant in The Ride to Conquer Cancer, I’ve committed to riding for two whole days! Crazy eh?!
Me, riding two full days in a row, with thousands of other people. As you can imagine, cycling that far is not going to be a simple feat for me. I’ll have to train and get in shape. But I’m excited that I can do something this big in the fight against cancer.

I know you understand why this is so important, and know why I’m asking for your financial support. My goal is to raise $ 2500 and I really hope you’ll help me get there. It’s hard asking my family, friends, collegues, companies for money, but this cause and this event are very important to me.
If you and your family, or your co-workers, could donate one hundred dollars together, that would be such a great help.

I can't tell you how much appreciated every dollar is to me! I have customers that donated money, my family in France, the company I work for....thank you thank you.
Please think of your family or friends that struggle with this horrible disease! If money could save someones life, wouldn't you?

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

What an accomplishment!
First of all I think I am going to reach my goal to raise $ 2500 within a week. The Penny Farthing bikes sell really good! And then, people are soooo generous, really! I registered for this ride because I wanted to do something I have never done. Was not sure if I could raise $ 2500 but if I don't try I never know. And see....
Then my training goes really well too. Today I accomplished a long bike ride. I rode from Coquitlam to Chilliwack and did almost 100 km in 4 hours. Kevin is my biggest supporter, he mapped my ride, made stops so I could get fresh water or a snack, and guided me from Mission, Abbotsford to Chilliwack. Our goal was Chilliwack Airport where they have a big sign "I FLY FOR PIE" and in this case my ride was actually a "I RIDE FOR PIE" because they really have the best amazing home made fresh pies! But after a long bike ride, I only wanted to have a big burger! Mmm...We met Kevin's daughter and her fiancee, had a great lunch together and then back home. Nope...not riding but the bike loaded in the truck and back to Coquitlam.
It was fun to meet a fellow team FINNsters this morning on my way to Maple Ridge. It seems we all are getting well prepared for our ride to Seattle!!

A great training ride on my working day!
Thanks to my collegue Jessica, I could go for another training ride with Team Finn. I was scheduled to work but Jessica covered my Sunday shift as a donation to my ride, isn't that awesome?
The training ride was great! We left from Iona Beach in Richmond, over River Road, took pictures on FINN Road and then to Dyke Road, Starbucks stop at Steveston and back to Iona....54 kilometers. A great ride with great people! Can't wait for the next one.

Today I joined Team Finn!
It was a lot of training last weekend. Saturday morning I joined the RTCC North Vancouver training ride. It was a beautiful day, lots of sunshine. We rode app. 55 km, most of it in Mt Seymour Provincial Park (I think that was the park) and a lot of climbing! So much climbing that I started to hate to ride, haha...but the reward was coming down after a while and flying down the hills. I was not really tired, so I think I could do another training again.
And so, the next morning, I got up early. I was going to meet up with Team Finn in North Vancouver, starting from Lions Gate Bridge. Two times I went over the Lions Gate Bridge, not knowing exactly where to meet or to park the truck? Then I noticed a 'pink rider', and I started to follow her. It was Lisa, one of the Team Finn riders, that pink colour stands out everything. Parked the truck, got my bike ready and we rode to this meeting point. It was a great ride as well. Although this time I felt my legs were quite sore from the day before, but hey, you got to challenge yourself!
We did about 3 hours, including a nice coffee stop at Starbucks! It was a fun ride, a fun team, so since today I am officially a Team Finn member. YAY! Proud and honoured to be part of this team. I lost a child too, not to cancer. I will always miss my daughter. Britt is my little angel. She is always with me. And that makes me strong, makes me who I am.

A brand new road bike!
Today I picked up a brand new bike. I have been training on a (quite heavy) mountainbike during the winter. Three to five times a week.
Spring is in the air, so time for a change! With my new Giant Avail 2 I will be much FASTER on the road. Next week is the first Training Ride for 40-60 km. Let's go for it!

Please sponsor me!
First I was not so sure if I would be able to do the ride. Think of it, it's quite a distance from Vancouver to Seattle! Since I am training every day I am off, I get stronger and faster. OK, physically I will make it, but now my other concern...do I have enough sponsors to raise $ 2500? If not, I won't ride. That would be a disappointment.
So please, any donation will help. It means a lot to all of us.

So sad
I wrote that one of my (far away) friends, actually a close friend to my sister, was diagnosed with lung cancer. On January 17th, she wrote a letter to my sister that she did not know how much time was left. Maybe five years? She just wanted to do a few more things and made a list. We will never know what she could have accomplished. She died a few days ago, only eleven days after she wrote that letter with the horrible news she got lung cancer. Sonja Verdonck, I will ride for you. The least I can do.
