On October 11, 2013, my mom was diagnosed with a stage 3 adenocarcinoma in her left lung. Needless to say, this was big news for our family and we weren't really sure how to approach or deal with it at the time. It was during this time I decided to join To The Max and ride my bike down to Seattle with a group of people who have the same goal in mind... To cure cancer in our lifetime.
This is my third year riding and will be the most emotional.
My first year was an incredible experience I'll never forget. Training and fundraising with the team helped me through the tough time and it all payed off on that rainy weekend full of cold, pain and achievment. We had raised over $100,000 for the first time in team history and it was truly something special to be a part of.
My second year was more emotional for me and many of my teammates. At the starting line my mom met us all in her declining condition and I knew it was a boost of strength for all of us. In the pouring rain once again we rode to Seattle through some of the worst winds the ride had ever seen, the first day was delayed.
Now, I'm beginning my third year without my mom.
She lost her battle on December 20th, 2015, she was 54 years old.
This year I make my personal goal $5400 in honour of my mom.
She may have lost her battle but the fight is not over for us, we won't stop fighting until cancer is cured and no one will have to go what my family, my mom or countless others have gone to due to this terrible disease.
We will cure cancer in our lifetime.
