This will be my first year riding to conquer cancer. I am incredibly inspired by the BC Cancer Foundation's strides to defeat this devastating disease, and the exciting work they are doing through genome sequencing, and immunotherapy research to name just a few of their intuitive research programs.
I, like so many of you have multiple people dear to me that have fought with cancer. My Aunt fought through breast cancer and is a survivor, and then there is my maternal Grandmother, who was such a pillar of strength for my family. My grandmother Marjorie Alice McClary passed away at the age of 91 and had a great full life, nonetheless her passing was devastating to us all.
I’m riding because of the huge impact cancer has in so many lives. I ride and imagine a future where my grandchildren are in awe that we once went 200+km's every year in protest of a disease they will hopefully only know about through textbooks. I ride to see an end to the suffering and heartache this disease forces on to this world.
I ride in honor of Joanna Gallivan-Smith this year. Joanna passed away June 9th, 2016 at the age of 33. Smart, thoughtful, and sassy, her values of compassion, justice, equality, love, kindness, laughter, fun, family and friends, to name a few, will live on forever in all who met her.
