Jill's fundraising page
Hello! I am going on this big bike ride so there is something tangible that you can see me doing when I ask for you to donate money. I would like your money for the following reasons.
Ovarian cancer is still widely referred to as a 'silent killer', though this dangerous misnomer may cause doctors (and the general public) to ignore what women who have had ovarian cancer already know: there are symptoms, just little awareness.
Science has only recently began acknowledging and backing these symptoms. As a fan of science, I feel very hurt by science in this regard. Unfortunately, symptoms that women have been complaining of for a very long time were often written off or not taken seriously due to their similarities to the effects of the menstrual cycle and menopause. Or maybe it's just those hysterical women getting all worked up all the time, amiright?
For the record, symptoms include abdominal bloating, indigestion, nausea, changes in appetite (due to good ol' ascites), frequent need to go #1, trouble going #2, abdomen getting real big (ascites again!), changes in menstruation, and according to my mom, 'twingeing' in the ovaries. Tell your friends!
This is why awareness is an important goal in my ride to conquer cancer. The other important goal is to raise money to support research into developing an ovarian cancer screening test that can test all women ('cause there isn't one) and develop more effective treatment options ('cause there hasn't been much in far too long).
Ovarian cancer has affected my family in a way that would really bum you out. I would like for other families to not go through what mine did, so if you are able to donate money to me I would greatly appreciate it. If you can't donate, I would love your help in educating people on the symptoms of ovarian cancer and the lack of funding for research. Go forth!
