Help Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer #TEALPOWER
This June, I’ll be participating in my second Ride to Conquer Cancer; an epic 200 km cycle from Toronto to Niagara Falls. I’ll be proudly riding for team #TEALPOWER, to help build awareness and raise funds to support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care at the Princess Margaret Hospital, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.
In October 2013, my girlfriend, best friend and partner in everything we do, Alison, was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer. Over the next 6 months she fought, and with the amazing mental support of family and friends Alison went through radiation and chemotherapy. Late last summer we heard the best two words anyone going through this wants to hear “cancer free”.
Never taking anything for granted, we carried on with our daily lives but the thought of it coming back never goes away. Then in March of this year, as I sat beside Ali at PMH, our doctor told us they found a tumour and the cancer was back... There’s no other way to say it, that day sucked. I was in shock, and couldn’t remotely imagine what was going through Ali’s head, but we knew we were ready to fight!!
As I write this message, Ali’s going through her second chemotherapy treatment, and she will have successfully finished her third by the June weekend we participate in the Ride to Conquer cancer. This June 13 -14, I’m riding proudly for #TEALPOWER. I’m riding for Alison, because she’s the strongest person I know. She’s somehow managed to keep a smile on her face whenever it counts, and her bravery and determination makes me want to be better at everything I accomplish. We’ve always been a great team, and even though she can’t ride with us this year, team #TEALPOWER will help give her motivation so she can join in 2016 and fly the yellow survivor flag. One day we’ll find a cure, and I want the satisfaction that we played one tiny part in that.
Follow Ali’s story on her blog: www.tealpowercanuck.wordpress.com. She started this a place to document her journey with the goal to create awareness in our country.
No doubt it will be an emotional day, and a journey like this definitely requires someone to help push you, so I’ll be riding with one of my best buds Chris again this year. He’s riding for our cause, and also for a family member who has battled this disease as well.
I hope you can contribute to this history making event with a donation. Together, let’s raise some money for cancer research and continue to create as much awareness as we possibly can!
